The tradition of Uang Japuik (Japuik Money) is a symbol of respect and acceptance in marriage. However, this practice often sparks debate because it is considered to carry economic burdens and social tensions. This study aims to describe the tradition of Uang Japuik in Pariaman cultural weddings from a Psycho-Indigenous approach. This type of research is qualitative with an interpretative and phenomenological approach, oriented towards understanding the deep meaning of the inner experiences, culture, and local spirituality of the Pariaman community related to the Uang Japuik tradition. This research refers to the Psycho-Indigenous approach. Data collection techniques in this study were in-depth interviews and participatory observation. Interviews were conducted openly with traditional leaders, couples, and parents who experienced the Uang Japuik tradition. Participatory observation involved directly observing wedding ceremonies involving Uang Japuik and then recording emotional expressions, inter-family relationships, and cultural symbols that emerged. The results of the study indicate that the Uang Japuik tradition functions as a symbol of honor, social responsibility, and a means of psychological healing within the community. This tradition gives rise to ambivalent experiences—between pride and social pressure—while still maintaining the emotional and spiritual balance of the community. Differences in interpretation between generations reflect a dynamic process of cultural negotiation, not a rejection of tradition.
